'brave new world' popped into your head because that was Larry's intent. when he announced the theme at the retreat meeting a couple weeks ago, he prefaced it with a quote from Aldous Huxley.

Dammit, you mean Larry wanted people to think of Burning Man as a place to get zonked out on drugs, have lots of sex and disappear into the desert?
I wonder if anyone is gong to dress up like Mad Max??? Heh.

Who's this Larry Dude?
I've been pondering on this theme for a while. I don't really grasp what Art Deco means. When I first saw the sketch for the theme, the first thing that popped into my head where the Oscars and the Kodak Theathre or Paramount Studios arch as a backdrop.

Then, I thought of it some more, and I am not familiar with "Brave New World", but the city of Zion (as seen in the Matrix Reloaded) came to mind...
And then the whole Fear of the Centinels breaking through and the Hope of the One and what The Future could mean to the city of Zion.

Here's a quick link for Art Deco: http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/a/artdeco.html IMHO the archtypal Art Deco object is an Airstream trailer, but I can't afford one.
I also have a certain fondness for a "Flesh Gordon" costume theme, which also fits in with Art Deco in a perverted way (especially the phallic spaceship).http://www.stomptokyo.com/badmoviereport/reviews/F/flesh_gordon.html
